Before there was a screw,
today there is a void...

Each year at Special’Eyes, we give our team of designers a blank canvas upon which they can stretch their creative muscles, in turn, paving the way for ever more innovative eyewear. Dark Hole is the perfect example of their creative juices.

The innovation involves the use of a void-reminiscent hinge, instead of a screw that can be found on virtually any other frame. As a result, this frame is made original by the fact that it doesn’t have any screws, and thereby, considerably reduces the likelihood of quality issues. This hinge mechanism with a sidereal void in its centre, will have you wondering how it actually works. The arm seems to open and close as if by magic... The magic of the Dark Hole, that is.
This hinge is patented and the project was nominated for the SILMO d’OR in 2018, in the “Frame Technological Innovation” category.

The made-to-measure glasses
for Gentlemen

We are driven by our passion to create, and it is through our own brand, BRETT, that we can truly express all our emotions and desires. One of these was based on the desire to create a product that our heroes can don on a daily basis, whatever the situation or activity. We wanted to give men the opportunity to change the style of their glasses, wherever and whenever they wanted.

Inspired by the two-material

ruffles from the 70's

Less than a year after its launch in the ultra-exclusive world of high-end eyewear brands, BRETT was ahead of the game by presenting a concept that pays homage to the stunning 4-wheel mechanics of the 1970s, at the SILMO d’Or 2019. More specifically, we focused on the bi-material steering wheels of those legendary cars, whose aesthetics were reinterpreted into the design of our frame fronts. Thus, the acetate circles are embedded into the 8 perforated titanium parts, and bestow a unique, combined style that fully integrates into the frame’s design.

This innovation led us to be nominated for a second consecutive time at the SILMO d’Or in 2019; this time in the “Optic Frame - Eyewear Designer” category.

Some projects stem from challenges.

What if what you call a hinge, wasn’t actually a hinge?

The project didn't start with the aim of designing a hinge. But rather, as a way of connecting the front of the glasses to the temples. This method became an extension of both the front and the temples. The line between these two elements had to be created without altering either design. And thus, the “Borderline” principle was born. “Border” being self-explanatory and “Line” representing the line that supposedly marks the boundary. This method then became linear... wired in fact. In order to bring this notion to life, we opted for an innovative technology: 3D titanium printing. The unique shape of the 3D piece called for a housing to be designed at both the front and temple level. This housing - titanium also - is able to accommodate the 3D piece, thanks to a 360°-positioned rail. The housing also accommodates the hinge’s axis of rotation, which allows the arm to be in an open or closed position. This idea was patented in 2019.
